Bertie is the Watsons' pointer from the Holly Webb book Sam the Stolen Puppy. He is a very miserable dog to Emily, when the Watsons yanked him hard on the leash. Emily is horrified by this and takes an immediate dislike to them. She even spots them warily when her friends are crowded round Sam, her golden Labrador puppy, making a fuss of him.
